XRF ANALYSIS

X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) is a non-destructive method to determine the chemical composition of an object. It works on the principle that when an object is hit with a certain X-ray beam, the atoms of that object become exited and each element emits specific X-rays back according to their atomic composition and is registered as such.

It was clear from the beginning that the chemical composition of Katrain's glass would be critical for determining its age.

Very fortunately for us, the Bruker Company considered Katrain so intriguing that we were invited to have Katrain analyzed at their Research Laboratory in Kennewick, WA (USA).

And so a comprehensive analysis was performed by Bruker Inc.’s Scientist; Dr. Bruce Kaiser (Click HERE to download/open analysis). His intrinsic knowledge of Material Science brought him to the conclusion that Forest glass and Soda-Lime glass co-existed in this stained glass artwork.

"Pigments and Glasses appear consistent with the time period that this art work was expected to be made"
