MEDALLION STILL EXISTS
It is known that the gold pendant worn in the Toledo Portrait was designed by Hans Holbein the Younger. The original medallion drawing by Holbein is located in the British Museum [SL,5308.25].
The Holbein drawing of the medallion has a blank space in the center. The rectangular shape and the six prongs indicate the placement for a jewel. Katrain shows a small object in this spot and the paintings have a jewel there indeed.
In Katrain, the medallion is highlighted by encircling it with lead came thus enhancing it from the rest of the portrait. But related to the lead came, we discovered a unique fascinating aspect of stained glass. We named this unknown phenomenon: CameLoss, click HERE.
