GARMENT and SLEEVES
Katrain shows a purple bodice with red sleeves and white lace.
The red sleeves are depicted as a substantial part of her gown. It might not be incidental that an analysis of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG# 1119) acknowledged in the description of it that some overpainting from later date was obscuring interesting parts of the original.
The white lace cuffs are known in the embroidery industry as the "Holbein stitch". When executed properly, one cannot differentiate the front from the back of the embroidered work.
